The best time for whale watching in Sri Lanka varies by location, with prospects of seeing them all year round. On the south coast, which includes Mirissa, Galle, Unawatuna, and Weligama, the best time is from November to April when the seas are flat and whales are attracted close to the shore. Conversely, the east coast, particularly Pasikuda and Trincomalee, is remarkable during May to September for whale watching because it is the whales’ seasonal movement that brings them there. During such periods, the ocean situation is also congenial, thereby providing more possibilities of observing blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins in the wild.

Sri Lanka has some great whale watching spots, and each one has its own charm. Mirissa on the south coast is the first choice, with daily boat excursions from November to April being an ideal place to spot blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins. On the east coast, Trincomalee from May to September is an excellent option with fewer crowds but with lots of whales close to its natural deep harbor. Kalpitiya on the northwest coast is famous for thrilling dolphin tours between November and March, when the audience can witness big herds of dolphins in numbersof  more than 1,000 together, while occasional whale sightings occur.
