Kalpitiya Lagoon, which is Sri Lanka’s kitesurfing capital, is the most visited, as it has flat, shallow water ideal for novice and freestyle pilots. It is also densely populated with schools and rental places for kitesurfing. Mannar, the more secluded one, is a hidden gem that boasts strong, consistent winds and a mix of flat and rough water, making it less crowded but equally as thrilling. Another easy place to learn is Kappalady Lagoon, which features shallow, flat water and regular winds that offer a tranquil and safe learning environment. If you want to combine kitesurfing with surfing, then Arugam Bay is a fantastic spot, with strong winds and perfect waves between May and September, and it’s a wave riders’ paradise. Last but not least, there is Delft Island, near Jaffna, which is an off-the-beaten-path experience with fine winds, isolated beaches, and a peculiar one, which requires a boat ride to visit.
Sri Lanka has two ideal kitesurfing seasons with ideal conditions for all levels of proficiency. The first season, from May to October, is powered by strong and regular southwest monsoon winds, and this is the best time to kitesurf in Kalpitiya, Vella Island, and Mannar. Wind speeds are firm and regular throughout this period, which is perfect for expert surfers looking for thrilling sessions. December to March is the time when there are soft winds, and it is the best time for newbies to learn and practice in calmer weather. Kalpitiya and Kappalady are the best spots for kitesurfing at this time, as their shallow and flat waters provide a safe and enjoyable experience for newbies.
