Why Visit Pidurangala Rock?
Pidurangala has been a sacred site for centuries. The rock and its surroundings were utilized as a Buddhist monastery during the reign of King Kashyapa, the same king who built Sigiriya. Buddhist monks who lived in caves around Sigiriya were relocated to Pidurangala, where a temple complex was established. The site retains its spiritual atmosphere with ancient ruins, a reclining Buddha statue, and remnants of meditation caves even today.
The Pidurangala hike is a challenging but not extremely strenuous climb, and it takes between 30–45 minutes to reach the top. The hike consists of stone steps, coarse rock paths, and a short rock scramble toward the end. While the hike is a bit challenging, the breathtaking view makes it all worth it. One of the main reasons to visit pidurangala is the breathtaking view of Sigiriya on top of the summit.
